Personal branding

In today's professional world, expertise alone is often not enough. The ability to communicate who you are, what you stand for, and the value you bring has become an essential component of career growth and leadership.

With this in mind, our Women Leadership Committee hosted a dedicated session on Personal Branding, bringing together professionals eager to better understand how to shape their visibility, amplify their impact, and align their personal narrative with their professional ambitions.

The discussion explored a powerful premise: whether we actively manage it or not, every one of us already has a personal brand. The real question is how intentionally we choose to build it.

Beyond Visibility: Understanding Personal Branding

Led by Oury Thomas, the session challenged common misconceptions about personal branding.

Rather than focusing on self-promotion, the conversation framed personal branding as the process of creating alignment between one's values, expertise, actions, and professional goals. It is about helping others understand who you are, what you contribute, and why they should engage with you.

Participants explored how personal branding influences career opportunities, professional credibility, leadership presence, and the ability to build meaningful relationships across industries and communities.

A Leadership Asset Often Underutilized

A central theme of the discussion was the observation that many professionals—particularly women—often underestimate the importance of investing in their own visibility.

While expertise and performance remain fundamental, they do not automatically translate into recognition or influence. Building a strong personal brand requires intentionality: identifying key audiences, communicating a clear message, and consistently demonstrating one's values and expertise.

The session encouraged participants to think strategically about how they present themselves and how they can become more visible within their organizations, industries, and broader professional networks.

From Community Building to Global Impact

The discussion was enriched by the testimony of Nora Touré, founder of Women in 3D Printing, a nonprofit organization that has grown into a global community of more than 30,000 members across 38 countries.

Drawing from her own entrepreneurial and leadership journey, Nora shared how personal branding can become a powerful catalyst for community building and impact. Her experience demonstrated that visibility is not simply about individual success—it can also be leveraged to create platforms, foster connections, and advance broader missions.

Her story offered a compelling example of how a clear vision, authentic leadership, and consistent engagement can transform an idea into a worldwide movement.

Aligning Purpose and Audience

Throughout the session, participants were encouraged to reflect on the audiences they seek to reach and the goals they hope to achieve.

Whether pursuing career advancement, entrepreneurial growth, industry recognition, or community leadership, the discussion emphasized the importance of aligning personal branding efforts with a clear sense of purpose.

Authenticity emerged as a recurring theme: the most effective personal brands are not manufactured personas, but genuine expressions of values, expertise, and aspirations.

The Personal Branding session offered participants practical insights into one of today's most important professional skills: the ability to shape and communicate one's unique value. More than a discussion about visibility, the event served as a reminder that personal branding is ultimately about influence, connection, and creating opportunities - for oneself and for others.
