SF Climate Week 2026 - From Ocean to Action: Expeditions and Solutions for Ocean Plastic

The FACC California Sustainability Committee and Capgemini kicked off SF Climate Week 2026 with two insightful panel discussions at Mission Rock.

The first panel featured Fabien Lamaison, Executive Director of Plastic Odyssey Fund, and Miguel Sossa, Capgemini's Deputy Sustainability Lead for the Americas, who addressed the critical issue of plastic pollution in our oceans. They highlighted the alarming rate of 20 tons of plastic waste entering the ocean every minute and the urgency of removing it from our shores before it becomes part of the microplastic crisis.

The Plastic Odyssey ocean clean up mission was shared and will soon be showcased in a new documentary series titled Impossible Cleanups by film director Ricky Rhodes.

The second panel, led by Dylan Garrett of Synapse, spotlighted innovators who are making a difference. Notable contributions came from Julia March, CEO of Sway, who is using seaweed as a plastic alternative, and Molly Morse of Mango Materials and Ryan Starling of Frog, who discussed the development of innovative bio-based materials to replace plastic. But plastic is here to stay as long as the fuel industry thrives.
