Proprietor, Kiatra Vineyards & NEOTEMPO Wines | Co-Founder, AgScout.ai
Kia Behnia is the proprietor of NEOTEMPO Wines, a modern Napa Valley estate blending sustainability, art, and innovation, and the co-founder of AgScout.ai, an AI-powered vineyard management platform that helps growers improve crop performance, forecast yields, and map vineyard health and disease.
Since 2011, Kia and his wife Tracy have stewarded Kiatra Vineyards, integrating organic and biodynamic farming with precision viticulture. Under the guidance of Phil Coturri and Enterprise Vineyards, Kiatra became Napa Valley’s first fully electric vineyard, powered by AI, smart irrigation, and electric tractors.
Their philosophy centers on improving fruit quality while reducing environmental impact—an approach that led to the creation of NEOTEMPO Wines in 2022. The estate-produced Cabernet Sauvignon features a patent-pending hexagonal bottle made from 100% recycled glass, reducing emissions by up to 40%. The bottle design was a finalist for the prestigious Formes de Luxe packaging award and represents NEOTEMPO’s ethos: innovation from dirt to glass.
In 2023, Kia co-founded AgScout.ai, the first AI-native vineyard management platform, now used by leading vineyards across Napa and Sonoma.
Before pivoting to wine and agriculture, Kia spent over 20 years in senior roles in enterprise technology, including VP at Splunk, CEO of PowWow Mobile, and SVP/Global CTO at BMC Software. He is a UC Davis Computer Science graduate and has contributed to national and global tech policy initiatives, including the Tech-America Cloud2 Commission and the World Economic Forum.
Winemaker at Massican Winery
After attending Columbia University where he played football, Petroski went to work for Time, Inc. While there, he earned his MBA from NYU and worked his way up the ranks towards a promising future in magazine publishing. A good chunk of his tenure at Time was spent managing advertising clients, which involved considerable schmoozing. This is how Dan learned wine, by walking his expense account through the lists of Manhattan’s top restaurants. When the Wall Street Journal tried to poach him, Dan took a moment to reflect. He jettisoned to Sicily for a year, where he interned at Valle dell’Acate.
While Dan’s intention was to return to New York to sell wine, a harvest invitation in 2006 was too good to pass up, and Dan left the city again, this time facing west. After harvest, Petroski was hired as cellar master, ultimately claiming the Larkmead winemaker title in 2012.
Before cementing his status as a Napa Valley Cabernet winemaker, in 2009 Dan launched a white wine only brand called Massican, an ode to the Mediterranean and Petroski's time spent living in Italy and drinking white wine.
Petroski's approach and ability to craft wines as diverse as Cabernet Sauvignon and Tocai Friulano has earned him the recognition as San Francisco Chronicle’s Winemaker of the Year in 2017.
